Professor Nick Kupensky (Ph.D., Yale University, 2017) is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Comparative Humanities at Bucknell University and the Vice-President of the Carpatho-Rusyn Research Center. His research investigates the confluence between aesthetics, industry, and politics in Eastern and Central Europe and the United States. Kupensky’s research interests also include Carpatho-Rusyn culture. In 2015, he launched a project in the Digital and Public Humanities dedicated to the life and work of the Rusyn-American writer Emil Kubek, whose Marko Šoltys (1923) was the first novel written in the Rusyn language. The Emil Kubek Project can be accessed at www.kubekproject.wordpress.com.

In the spring of 1938, Life magazine sent their headline-making photographer Margaret Bourke-White to Europe to report on what many felt could be the final days of the First Czechoslovak Republic. Accompanied by her partner, the American writer Erskine Caldwell, Bourke-White spent five months traveling throughout Czechoslovakia and made a brief visit to Subcarpathian Rus' that May. After her trip, twenty-two images of Subcarpathia appeared in her travelogue North of the Danube (1939), which captures a unique, fleeting moment in the history of the Rusyns before World War II completely upended their way of life. Professor Nick Kupensky (Bucknell University) will tell the story of Bourke-White’s journey to Subcarpathia and will reveal what the rich visual language of her photographs says about her Rusyn subjects.

Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.
