May, 31, 1918, the Pittsburgh Agreement was signed in the Loyal Order of Moose headquarters building in Pittsburgh, PA. The agreement presented for the first time in a public declaration the intention of Slovaks and Czechs to establish one common state. This agreement was the expression of a desire by American Slovaks for their people in Slovakia to have the same type of freedom and opportunity they enjoyed in the United States. Based on this premise, the Rusyn people also asked to join and be part of the newly-created state.
