    Hi, Do you have to be USA based to complete genealogy form. I'm looking for my family's history. Waszczyszyn from Salashe 'Bruckenthal.' My family were lemko I believe and I'm struggling lol, but I'm based in UK. Thanks

    There is a Leschak family here in Minnesota.  They are from the Iron Range.  I can't remember the village they are from, but it is in Southern Poland - Lemko area.

    I am doing a little research for my wife's side of the family. It seems according to census records and other documents that I have found they all claim to be from Galicia, which is a pretty big place :) 

    The first surname is Leschak but I have seen it spelled Lesczak and even Loschock. 

    The second surname is Lukachik. One member of the family's given name shows up in records as Humphrey and Onufer. I am not familiar with the name Onufer. I am assuming it is a variant of Onuphrey?

    If anyone is familiar with these surnames please let me know if you have any idea what villages they come from so I can try to look for more info regarding them.  Thank you.

    Hello,

    I cannot see the records for Vernar online.  The baptisms are indexed though and I do see your names.  They are in a Greek Catholic village so I have to believe they are Rusyns who lived in outlier villages in the former Spis Co.  Having said this, this locality is not listed in Professor Magocsi's book, "Our People".   Here is a link to an article on these outlier villages:

    Hello! I am researching my grandfather's lineage in Slovakia. I can't find their religion on any of the documents so far, and am trying to figure out if they were Rusyn or not. My grandmother's side was Greek Catholic from Stryj, so I'm curious if they were both of Rusyn background or not. Here are some details on my grandfather's side; I would love to know if there are any clues in their names or other details. They were from Vernár, Poprad, Slovakia. Thank you for any assistance!

    I am always fascinated when I come across a new Rusyn surname. Going through the passenger lists tonight I found a few.  Teles, I haven't seen before as well as Jelko , Janco  and Isokie. What do you think?

    Hi Ashlynn,

    I doubt anyone would be able to clarify were your ancestors Huculs or Bukovinians. Such last name could be found in various regions in those lands (it's like Mueller or Smith - based on profession). Only your ancestors would know which group dialect, customs were closer to them. I would say the village is somewhat closer to Chernivtsi, to Bukovyna.

    Maybe, if you will be lucky and trace your ancestors metrical records, then try to write to that village council or to the local school (to principal or the history teacher), or to the priest and ask them to inquire among local elders about your ancestors - maybe some hints can surface up. But these are only suggestions. 

    Local archives would need clear dates for their search.
