My Lemko family attends/attended St. Michaels Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Hammond Indiana, which is very close to St. Mary's in Whiting.

    Ever been to Dan's Pierogies?

Arlene, it was the Onda family that belonged to St. Marys of the Assumption Church.  The Schefflers were German Lutherans

Andreas Onda Is buried there but no marker. Maria is buried at the St. Marys cemetery with a marker.  It may be Mary Onda

Andreas dates are  1848-1927  Maria's dates are 1856 - 1907  They were married in 1876.  He came to USA first and in 1893 the family came.  They were from Smolnik, Zemplin, Slovakia.

Andreas had a brother George (Juraj) born 1862. Thanks for your help.  John

    Hi John,

When did your Scheffler family arrive in the Chicago area and began attending St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church.  Do you have any names, dates or events that occurred at the church, as this would give a time line for the family.  Exactly who or what information are you looking to get.  I'm familiar with the church and may be able to assist you.

    Hi,

I was absolutely amazed my first visit that I found a relative. In shock, actually and the story that unfolded was totally unbelievable. Here was my 80 something cousin (still trying to find the direct relationship) whose parents were born and raised in the village I was in. Kostryna, Ukraine. They immigrated to Braddock PA and his father worked in the steel mills. He and his sister were born there! Americans!  And then , the story goes, his mother became ill and thought people were stealing from her. And they left America and went home when Andrej was probably around 9. At first he was suspicious of me then by end of visit he was crying and wanted to go home with his "sister."

I will never forget that visit.           Sharon

Hi Bruce and Sharon, Yes, it is wonderful to put the puzzle of your family origins together.  Bruce, my Uram connection is Julianna Uram from Dlugie, born to house #30.  She would be my great grandmother.

Sharon, the first time I visited my ancestral villages, I was quivering with emotion..   I was walking the walk of my forefathers, visiting the churches in which they were baptized.  Finally reconnecting with displaced relatives .  There is no better feeling.

    Hi Gloria,

Some of the villages you mention I have been to. My cousin and I share Pohanish ancestry but then her father , John Badick who  is a Lemko  was born in Svidnik. We visited Svidnik and was impressed by the friendliness of the people. We met a gentleman who was at a birthday party at the hotel we were staying . We talked and he invited us to visit his home. He knew of the family and worked for the local government and found good info on the family. we even got to stand on the corner where there house once was. It was a great experience.

My search has been a wonderful journey and each revelation has been exciting..

    Gloria,

I hope you are doing well, its great to see you here.

I know that we have a distant (69 cM) DNA match and I believe we share the surname Uram, my 2nd great grandmother Eva Uram (daughter of Jacob Uram and Parascevia Kawka) was from neighboring Czarne while I believe your Uram is from Dlugie.

Your Carpathians Highlands blog is a great resource. Thank you for that.
