You do know the communists burned all the villages down there, murdered many residents and deported the remainder in 1947 in an action called "Operation Vistula", correct?   Most the known records were also destroyed.

    Czaszyn

One added detail of potential interest-- if Ken is interested in families with the Salak surname from Czaszyn (pronounced similar to Chashin), there's also an interesting ad posted in the Ukrainian-language newspaper _Svoboda_ (Freedom) published in New York and Jersey City on Dec. 27, 1945 (last page [253], far upper right-hand corner) (see attached) that reads in English translation: "Nikolas Salak seeks his brother Mykhailo Salak from Czaszyn of the Lisko district. He moved to Hamilton, Ont., Canada or Niagra Falls." The writer's address follows in English: "Nick Salak, 314 Broad St., Box 342, St. Clair, PA." Best, Karen

    Ken,

These are the records you will need to continue your genealogical research:

    1888-1934 BMD for Czaszyn

    https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/jednostka/-/jednostka/18065305

They are the State Archive in Przemysl.  They are yet to be digitized though.

You can inquire at the archive as to when they might be done.  Hopefully you can find a sibling  of your great-grandfather being baptized which should give not only parents but grandparents of the child.  You will need this information to continue your search as the earlier records for Czaszyn are extant only from 1784-1841 from what I can see now.

The information that has come through on this request has been great.  I have learned a lot more about Czaczyn Poland from this than all my search’s.  The links are great.  My grandfather settled in Mckees Rocks (suburb of Pittsburgh) however he came through Baltimore and not Ellis Island.  I did notice two Salak’s posted coming through Ellis from Czaczyn.  I will look at the church listings.

    Thank you

    Ken

Ken, in addition to the great advice below about Czaszyn, here is a list of surnames of landowners in the village in 1787, including two Salak families.

    http://www.carpatho-rusyn.org/new/325.htm

Where did your grandfather settle? The hot spots for Czaszyn emigrants were mostly in eastern Pennsylvania, especially Maizeville / Gilberton / Mahanoy Plane, Frackville, and Saint Clair, in Schuylkill County, around Freeland near Hazleton in Luzerne County, the Northampton and Allentown areas, and in western PA, as Hunter mentioned, also Monessen (and McKeesport) around Pittsburgh.

    Hi Ken and Hunter.

      Additional info from Karen Rosneck

A couple of other things of potential interest to Ken and others with Rusyn ancestry in what's now Poland. The three-volume set-- _Knyha pam'iati Lemkivshchyny, 1944-1946) (L'viv, 2016) lists the names of all those who were deported by the Polish authorities to Ukraine at this time. Volume three (p. 647-51) includes the village of Czaszyn. All these people were sent either to Ternopil'ska oblast' (Ternopil' Province) or L'vivska oblast' (L'viv Province) in Ukraine. The listing of names of the deportees for each villages includes date of birth, house number and occupation.

Bogdan Horbal's very helpful recent reference work: _Lemko Studies: A Handbook_ (NY, 2010) includes a listing (Appendix II) of research studies on individual villages which also can be helpful in finding out more about the history of your ancestral village. In this case, Czaszyn was listed but unfortunately without a any studies identified.

    Ken,

My Great-Grandfather, Jan Miszczyszyn (1881) was from Czaszyn, Lisko, Galicia.

His parents were Ivan Miszczyszyn & Zofia Kudlik.

I have little information on his parents, but hope to visit Czaszyn in the near future. I know that Jan immigrated from Czaszyn in 1901 and settled in Monessen, PA. He married my Great-Grandmother, Katarzyna Dobrzanska in 1908. Katarzyna was from Lukowe, Lisko, Galicia.

    Hi Ken,

Here is information on your town. Credits go to Karen Rosneck

    1. There is a Czałczyn , but I don't think this is a Rusyn/Lemko village (see sites below)

https://www.lopuszno.pl/samorzad/solectwa/czalczyn (official village site at the district's page)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czałczyn (Wikipedia entry about the village in English)

    2. There also is a Czaszyn which may be what he means, formerly in Sanok County, now Krosno County, that is a Lemko/Rusyn village:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czaszyn (Wikipedia entry in English on the village)

http://www.czaszyn.pl/ (official website for the village, many nice photos)
[Use Google Translate [ translate.google.com ], copying and pasting portions into the search boxes (after setting the desired languages in the drop-down boxes to English and Polish, to get a rough translation if he knows little or no Polish].

    3. For more on tracing Lemko Rusyn roots in Poland:

Try, for example: https://lemko-ool.com/?p=2187&lang=en (nice selection of resources by The Organization for Defense of Lemkivshchyna (NY) (they publish a magazine called _Lemkivshchyna_ (in Ukrainian and some English) about Lemkos (many living presently in Ukraine after the forced resettlement there by Poles known as Operation Operation Vistula [Polish: Akcja Wisła] in 1947).

See also the the parish records scanned and available online for various parishes at: https://geneteka.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=gt&lang=&w=09pk&rid=5338 (Polskie Towarzystwo Genealogiczne [Polish Genealogical Society]) This may be another way to identify and verify the village name if necessary. Many Polish archives also have scanned parish registers and other documents available online to be accessed at their websites more directly if preferred.
