    John,

In speaking with a lifelong friend from Binghamton, she told me she knew Cheryl Sansky as a child.  They lived in different apartments in the same house.  She remembers when Cheryl’s father died while her mother was expecting another child.  I think Cheryl is the granddaughter of Charles.

Reg. Binghamton. When I was in Lyuta (near Kostrina) someone said they had relatives in Binghamton. The surname is Dohanich. Anyone know a family with this surname in Binghamton?

My hometown is Binghamton, although I haven’t lived there in nearly fifty years.  I did go back until a few years ago until my brothers, who still lived there, passed away.

I don’t recall the name Sansky, but I did know of Lisick (with an “i” who went to St. Michael’s Church on Clinton Street, as I did.  I believe Andrew married Helen Selanich and his father was Frank.  Any relation?

    Hi Maureen,

My family is from the same villages you write of. And some immigrated to Binghamton. I have asked a researcher who has expertise in research in this area to look into what he can find. He helped me greatly with the census and I was thrilled to see my families living in the villages.  I recall seeing your surname as well. We will get the info to you.  I don't recall if you noted  both your grandparents surnames. The more info we have the better. If you would like to email me @ shangp@rcn.com

Also, the Verkovina Bystra census is mentioned.  Where can I find that?

My grandfather and his brother who settled in Binghamton, NY, were from Verkhovina Bystra (Hatarzog).  They were Vasil (later Charles) and John.  I believe their father was Antoni.  My grandfather’s mother was a Czuma.  (Vasil’s).  I don’t know about John’s because I vaguely recall my mother telling me my grandfather also had a stepmother after his mother died.  I briefly visited Volosianka in search of a nephew that my grandfather corresponded with, but reached a dead end.  I went to the church there and talked to some men working there.  If I understood correctly, (I speak some Russian, but no Rusyn), the nephew had died, along with his daughter and no one in the family was left in the village.

i would like to add to my genealogy tree, but am stumped.  Does anyone have information on where I might look for my ancestors info.

    Karen,

Looking thru the 1921 census for Verkovyna Bystry (Hatarszog) there are many Solyaks in the village. One family lived next door to my Povchanics family. A  few of the Solyaks were Michael and family of Maria and Polaha. Solyak families - Vasily, Ivan. Olena, Maria , Mikolaj ,Yevka . Also found in Volosanka.

Karen ;   My Great Grandmother was a Solyak. She married a Sachko. Sachkos were from the village of Lyuta which is close to Kostrina. I suspect she was not from Lyuta because I can't find any other Solyaks in Lyuta. I don't know any other information on the Solyak family so I would be interested in any further information on the family.

    Hi Karen,

My grandmother was a Solyak.  All along, I was looking for the surname Shilak as that was what was on her death cert. Looking at the Verkovyna census I see the Solyak families are there along with my Pochanics, Straskulics, Ivaskovich. I don't have more information but I am looking. Please share if you find anything.

Solyaks. My great grandmother was Marie Solyak who married Joseph Straskulic. On the census there are a fair number of Solyaks living in Verkovyna Bystry.  So glad to connect with another Solyak.
