This month we feature an ebook of sorts. This is an English translation of Pod Sninským Kamenom by Vladimír Slimák, translated by Bill Tarkulich and Mark Sabol in 2002.
This book provides a look at the history of the Snina region in eastern Slovakia. There are references to industry, education, natural features, etc. It includes mentions of villages like Stakčín, Ulič, Ubľa, Zboj, Nová Sedlica, Uličské Krivé, Topoľa, Ruský Potok, and others. The information can be a bit dry at times, but overall it offers a valuable look at the region over the years. The English translation also includes added indices: placenames, surnames, and World War Two information (battlegrounds, military units, and military figures).
It is worth noting the era in which this book was written:
‘The book was written in 1964 clearly under the heavy hand of the Czechoslovakia Communist Party. It focuses on the large town of Snina and its environs. No attempt was made in the translation to diffuse the rhetoric which glorifies the Party’s accomplishments or its claims of being a superior form of governance over capitalism. For this rhetoric is a part of Slovakia history and must be fairly presented.’
