“Immigrant Steamships 1890-1950” will show and discuss the major trans-Atlantic steamship companies, ports, and ships that our ancestors chose for their “trip of a lifetime.”  Dr. Valasek will discuss living conditions on board these great ships, as well as where these ships’ passenger records may be found and how to find “shipping memorabilia” to add to your ancestors’ stories.

Paul S. Valasek is a three-time graduate of Loyola University of Chicago, earning his Doctorate in Dentistry in 1984.  Born and raised in Chicago, he and his wife Andrea have always been interested in their ancestries and their families’ origins in Europe.  The first of Dr. Valasek’s numerous trips to Europe, in 1974, with his immigrant grandfather Joseph Valasek, was a major turning point in his life.  He has written numerous articles for genealogical publications, is an international lecturer, has published two books on Polish-American topics, and is about to publish his third book.  He has been either an officer or founding member of: the Polish Genealogical Society of America (PGSA), the Czech and Slovak American Genealogical Society of Illinois (CSAGSI), the Moravian Historical Society, the Carpatho- Rusyn Society (Pittsburgh), the Polish-American website www.PolishRoots.org, the Illinois State Genealogical Society, the Polish Museum of America (Chicago), the Czechoslovak Heritage Museum of Illinois, and the Czechoslovak Genealogical Society International (CGSI, Minnesota).
