Christine’s Note: In this recurring column I’ll share information about Carpatho-Rusyn books. Some will be books you might already be familiar with, and some you might not. Either way, we hope you enjoy these recommendations.

This month we feature a recently-released book with lots of interesting information – From Thatched-Roof Houses to Immigrant Entrepreneurship: First Generation Lemko-American Businessmen by Bogdan Horbal.

In this book, Bogdan Horbal shares mini-biographies of various Lemkos who started businesses in the United States. Along with biographical and entrepreneurial information, you will find photos, naturalization records, lots of interesting ads from throughout the years, and even a patent or two. This book is a great resource for anyone who is curious what the first generation of Lemko Rusyns did if they didn’t end up working in the mines or steel mills. Their stores, hotels, taverns, and funeral homes were critical parts of each Rusyn community in the US.
