Join us for a talk on early Lemko business men in America, with special guest Dr. Bogdan Horbal, Curator for Slavic and East European Collections at the New York Public Library.

The Lemkos began immigrating to the United States in the late 19th century. Arriving with minimal resources and limited education, they were often compelled to take on hard and hazardous jobs, which many retained throughout their working lives. However, some individuals managed to establish small businesses. This presentation provides an overview of Lemko entrepreneurship during the early years of their immigration, and is based on Dr. Horbal’s recent book, From Thatched-Roof Houses to Immigrant Entrepreneurship: First Generation Lemko-American Businessmen.

Thatched-Roof Houses to Immigrant Entrepreneurship is available in the C-RS Heritage Store, and was recently featured in Christine Hrichak’s book recommendation column for Our People.

Bogdan Horbal is a historian and librarian serving as the Curator for Slavic and East European Collections at the New York Public Library. He holds a Master of Library Science from Queens College, CUNY, and a PhD in history from the University of Wrocław in Poland. Dr. Horbal has authored more than a hundred articles and six books, with the majority of his work focusing on Lemko-related topics.
